Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) can be due to a number things. It can simply run in the family, or be due to specific things like anxiety or excess weight.
How is excessive sweating treated?
There are different ways to address excessive sweating. Antiperspirants, deodorants and sweat pads can be applied to reduce sweating or the effects of sweating. Medications to reduce anxiety or the activity of the sweat glands themselves (eg. Propanalol, pro-banthine) can be used. Botulinum toxin can also be injected into the underarm areas to treat the problem. Surgery is also an option.
Here at the Minster Clinic, hyperhydrosis is treated by the use of Botulinum toxin injections as this is a very effective means of treatment without the need for risky surgery.
How does Botulinum stop underarm hyperhydrosis?
Botulinum toxin acts by preventing nerves from sending chemical signals to the sweat glands, thereby reducing sweating in these areas by up to 80%.
How long does treatment take?
Treatments only take about 15-20 minutes and you can resume normal activities immediately. Rarely some patients who are very large or have a severe problem require a bigger dose which carries a supplemental fee which can be discussed with the doctor
Is BOTOX® for hyperhydrosis available on the NHS?
Unfortunately, although hyperhydrosis is a medical condition, it is not universally available on the NHS.
Who can provide hyperhydrosis treatment?
Technically, it is classed as a medical treatment, and not a cosmetic one, so clinics providing the service have to be registered with the Care Quality Commission to be compliant. At the Minster Clinic, all treatments are performed by fully qualified, experienced doctors in a safe, relaxing and convenient environment.
How long does the effect last?
The effect last from 6-9 months on average. With regular repeated treatments, this tends to increase with time
How much does it cost?
Hyperhydrosis treatment for both underarms costs £415.
