Facial Fillers Information
Facial Fillers are medical products which are licensed and used to restore volume or fill in static lines in the face. They are dissolvable products which are injected into or under the skin. Reversible Fillers in popular use today are made of synthetically produced Hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring chemical in the skin, which helps to maintain youthful skin tone by retaining water. Facial fillers work by physically restoring volume, and by mimicking the osmotic effect of natural HA. They have an excellent safety profile when used in experienced hands.
Examples of Facial Fillers include Juverderm, Restylane, Emmervel and Belotero.
What to expect during treatment
The treatment takes anywhere from 15-45 minutes depending on the areas treated. Prior to treatment a full facial assessment is undertaken. Various treatment options are discussed and a treatment plan will be formulated in partnership with you that will suit your budget and achieve the results you want. Local anaesthetic creams may or may not be used depending on your preference. Most of the fillers we use do contain local anaesthetic and are well tolerated by most patients without the need for further anaesthetic. The injections are done using very fine needles or cannulas with the aim of depositing the product just under the skin or in the underlying fat depending on the area being treated. Mild discomfort may be experienced, but this is short-lived. There is no “downtime” associated with filler treatments. Normal activites can be resumed straightaway after treatment. Results are immediate, and further improvement s are expected 1-2 weeks after treatment due to the osmotic (water- drawing) effect of HAs.
What to expect after treatment
The results of Dermal Filler treatment are immediately apparent after the procedure. Wrinkle, lines and folds in the treatment area will be visibly reduced, and the surrounding skin will appear firmer, smoother and younger. The improvements will continue to develop for a week or two post-injection as the filler draws water into the tissues, resulting in increased freshness, lift and tone.
Occasionally slight redness, bruising and/or swelling can occur following injection. These effects are short-lived and can be covered with make-up whilst waiting for them to subside.
Are Dermal Fillers Safe?
In a word, yes! At the Minster Clinic, we only use fillers that have a proven safety record from reputable companies such as Allergan, Galderma and Merz. All treatments are carried out by accredited and experienced doctors who have been trained in the advanced use of dermal fillers.
Dermal fillers can however be dangerous in the wrong hands, and we strongly advise patients to make sure that any treatment they have is undertaken by a doctor who is appropriately trained and insured to carry out that procedure.
How long do the effects of fillers last?
The effect of Fillers can last from 6- 24 months depending on type of filler used and individuals. Longer lasting fillers tend to be more expensive than shorter lasting ones.
