Acne is a common skin condition that usually starts in teenage years, but some people still get acne in their 20’s, 30’s and a small number of people in their 40’s. Pores in the skin (hair follicles in the skin associated with oil producing glands) are the sites where spots form. Areas with a high density of pores are where spots are more likely, such as T zone of the face, central chest and back.
Black heads (open comedones) and white heads (closed comedones) are the hallmark of acne. If these are not present then there may be other causes for your spots. In severe acne the inflammation goes deep into the skin, inflamed nodules and cysts can lead to significant scaring. It is vital that acne is treated so that this scarring is prevented.
At The Minster Clinic we are happy to provide a free consultation regarding active acne and acne scarring. We will assess your skin to determine if you have simple acne or make sure that you have been assessed for underlying causes or for other conditions that can present with similar features such as Rosacea. We will assess the effectiveness of any treatments that you have tried so far and help you plan further treatment if required. For active acne we will advise topical or oral treatments and can issue prescriptions if necessary. The Minster Clinic has invested in state of the art equipment such as the K-laser blue derma, which has a blue light component to kill Propionibacterium acnes (P acnes) bacteria in the skin and a near infra red light component which helps the skin heal quicker and reduces inflammation.
Tixel, which is another innovative treatment, can be used to treat active acne as well as significantly improve skin that has been scarred by severe acne.
